I find David Littlejohn’s comments about the Resnick’s art collection very strange. He finds incongruity in two wealthy Southern Californians, who made their money in things like soft drinks, collecting ‘out-of-fashion tips for girls art’ of the French 18th and 19th century. Hmmm…Since when has this art been ‘out-of-fashion’ ? The greatest collectors in the world ( many of whom he mentions in his article) have been collecting this stuff for 200 years. Henry Huntington ( a Southern Californian who made his money in the seamy railroad and property business) collected similar art, and thank God, left it here in the world famous Huntington Art Musuem and Library. Does Mr. Littlejohn find that distasteful? Now, as to the Resnick art itself: If there’s one thing art history has taught us is that what appears to be of low value today, eventually becomes hugely valuable in the future. Did anyone ever imagine that ugly, mid-60′s Italian metal sculptures would ever command $100 million at auctions? So Mr. Littlejohn should be careful of what he disparages.
